I must say I have the wisest 7 year old.
This is what he said to me recently when I was feeling very sad about a terrible mistake I made. ‘Mum everyone makes mistakes, accidents do happen’ and he gave me a hug.
Wow when I heard those words, I got up, dried my teary eyes, gave him a hug and said thank you.
You know a lot of times we make mistakes and we find it so hard to forgive ourselves, even those around us make us feel so terrible. But as my 7 year old son said accidents happen. We never plan for these accidents, neither do we intend to make mistakes. But when we find ourselves in these kind of situations, what do we do? Do we berate ourselves, holding on to the errors, worrying what’s going to happen as a result of our errors? or do we rise above it and move on?
The truth is that what’s happened has happened, we cant change it, but we can learn from it. In my own case I have learnt to look very closely when I am wanting to fuel my car. I accidentally fueled my diesel engine with petrol. You may say ‘oh that’s a very silly thing to have done’ but mistakes do happen and that’s why I couldn’t forgive myself because I felt I ought to have known better, but the words from my 7 year old reminds me of the scripture in Proverbs 24:16 -’for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again’.
You may not have mis-fueled your car, but what’s that thing you wish never happened? Learn to forgive yourself, rise above it and move on.
You cant change what’s happened but you can leave it alone. Let it go and Let God.
